Creating an 85th Birthday Gift

My husband’s grandmother has made an afghan for each of her twenty-nine {29!} great grandchildren. She asked each set of parents what colors they wanted for their little one’s blanket. Then she would select a pattern and present the afghan after the baby was born.

Not long after my daughter was born, I got kind of curious as to what all the other blankets looked like. Then I thought, wouldn’t it be cool to get a picture of each great grandchild with their blanket?? It’d be so fun to put them all together into a print.

It is grandma’s 85th birthday this year. I mentioned my idea to my mother-in-law about six months ago, and she loved the idea of a print. Then I thought putting all of the pictures into a photo book that she could carry around would be really special too.

But there was one teeny, tiny little hitch to my grand plan. These 29 grandchildren come from 12 different families all over the country. The project was in the back of my mind, but time completely got away from me. Less than two weeks before I needed all the pictures to put this project together, I managed to send out an email with my brilliant idea.

In spite of the very short time frame, everyone did a beautiful job with their kids and afghans. She received the finished products on Sunday and I hear she was “over the moon”! I only wish I’d been there to see her face.

All 29 Great Grands

And here’s my three with their blankets.

My ThreeWhat a fun project to pull together and see come from a fleeting thought I’d had one morning.

Happy 85th Birthday, Great Grandma Gwen!

Day 365

This morning, Paul was taking a shower and thought it would be fun to put his little handprints all over the inside of the shower door. I thought it made for a great picture for the last day of 2009.

And this picture brings us to the end of 2009. I have to say that I didn’t quite do what I intended at the beginning with this project, but I do feel like doing the blog has helped me with improving my photography skills. I found myself looking for things to do just so I could take a picture. I also found myself up at night trying to find something worthwhile to take a picture of for the day.

I’m thrilled to have made it all the way through the year with this daily picture blog. I’m also really looking forward to 2010 because I’m planning to go a different direction and I’m pretty excited (and nervous) about starting tomorrow.

Day 211

I’ve raided about all aspects of my beading stash to work on a new project. I have a vision, so we’ll see how it goes. I got all these pieces out and was playing around and thought I’d just take a picture for fun. I really, really love that I’m planning around the Fluorite I’ve been collecting for years.

Day 193

I’m working on packing up tonight for our trip back home tomorrow evening. Before I started gathering up my beading stuff, I thought I’d take a picture of the setup I enjoyed while on our trip (complete with my Kleenex box and snack). I was able to take over a desk and just leave my stuff on it to work on as I was able. The boys were actually quite good about leaving my project alone.

It’s been nice to no only get a break from the routine of life, but to also be able to dedicate some time to making jewelry. The only project I worked on was for the contest that ends in just a few short days. I’m not as far as I hoped, but I’m making good progress.

Now to get back to packing.

Day 123

I have been fascinated by those fixed cameras that take a picture every single day. I would seriously love to figure out how to rig something up like that myself. For now, I thought I’d try to tackle a project that didn’t require special equipment and set-up.

For nearly a month now I have been trying to take a picture just about every day of the leaves growing on the Maple tree in our back yard. I wasn’t sure when to end this little project, so today’s the day.

Day 106

Paul comes home with a preschool project of some sort nearly every single class day. There’s just no way we’re going to be able to keep all of these projects, and often they end up so well loved that they’re not quite the same as when they first came home.

I’ve taken to trying to snap a picture of his projects as a way of keeping them without having to find a place to store them. I haven’t been as good about it as I could be, but I’m working on it. Today he brought home this cute little boat, and he’s super excited to try it out tonight in the bath.
