Week 15: A Different View

This week the theme was Reflection.  I have an image I loved from one of my 365s of a girl peering into the water.  I wanted to try to do something along those lines.  What you might not realize from the image is she’s looking into an ashtray/garbage can combination that had filled with rainwater.

I like the idea of beauty being reflected out of something “less beautiful”.  I also love reflections in puddles and how you can catch something really unique if you position yourself in just the right place.

Week 15 ~ Reflection

I love how this turned out.  I love the beauty of the sunny sky and trees reflected out of the muddy waters.  I also really liked that one, lone leaf sitting on the surface of the mud.

Week 14: Signs of Spring

Spring is one of my favorite times of year because of the new growth, crazy weather, and blooming flowers.  I was very excited that the theme for the week was Bloom.  Our family took a little train ride to Portland for a long weekend.  While we were there we saw many local sights.

On the first day we went to the zoo, and I had all sorts of fun taking pictures of the flowers. When I saw these blossoms, I knew I wanted a good image for this week.  I have no idea what this flower is, but I loved the long, wavy petals.

Week 14 ~ Bloom

I especially loved this one because I managed to nail the focus (as they say), and that’s something I really struggle with.  I’ll have to go back and process more of the flower images from our trip.

Week 13: Feeling Blue

Blue was the theme of the week, and I was so excited because blue is one of my favorite colors. But I had a really hard time coming up with something I liked that fit within the theme.  Sometimes being given a theme actually makes my mind a complete creative blank.

Eventually I came up with two different images.  The first was because it was sunny this week and the blue sky was gorgeous.  I also really wanted to try my hand at getting that sun flare.

blue skyFor my second image, I had this idea for Easter.  I wanted to do an Easter basket filled with eggs, but only one blue egg.  I really struggled with composition.  The idea in my head didn’t quite make it out of the camera with this one.

I hope everyone had a Happy Easter!

Week 12: Diamond in the Weeds

This week’s theme was Signs of Spring.  My original thought was to get some Cherry Blossom buds, but Bloom is the theme in a couple weeks, so I decided to go a different direction.

One morning last week I noticed the frost on the ground and thought it might be a good time to get a picture of something growing out in the yard.  I started with the frost on the leaves, and then I noticed the frozen dew drops around the Dandelions.

2013week12smIt kind of cracks me up that Dandelions are so despised in the yard, but at the same time can make some of the most lovely images.  I had a lot of fun with my macro lens for this one and spent a great deal of time deciding on how I wanted to crop.

I hope you enjoy my weed as much as I did this week.

Week 11: Night Portrait

The theme for this week was Night Portrait.  For the most part, this image turned out like I planned.  I wanted to have my subject under a street light right after the sun had gone down.  I wasn’t entirely sure how I was going to pose.

As soon as the street lights came on, I took my little five-year-old out, and I quickly realized that in order to get the light I needed, his face would have to be turned up more than he was comfortable with.

I asked him to look up, and of course, it was starting to rain.  He basically thought mom was a little nuts, but you can tell by the expression on his face that he was having fun.

2013week11smThis one also took quite a bit of processing to get to where I was happy with it.  But for a first time with this type of portrait, I was pretty happy with the results.

Week 10: A Boy in Motion

The theme for this week was Motion.  I spent probably close to an hour in my kitchen trying to get the motion of drip of water from the faucet.  Yeah, that wasn’t working out the way I envisioned.  I am at a place with my photography where I am frustrated with being unable to get the idea in my head out of my camera.  It’s a hurdle, but I’ll get over it.

I actually wasn’t going to share this, but I processed it to the best of my ability, so why not. And to be perfectly honest, my journey in life is all about growth, so why not document what I’m doing so I can look back and see how I’ve improved.

2013week10sm

It’s technically motion, but not what I wanted.

So after that frustration, I wasn’t sure what to do.  Then I was at the park with my kids on Saturday morning and it practically hit me.

I was watching my five-year-old climb down a ladder and I suddenly thought, at some point here he’s going to drop.  I already had my shutter slowed down a little so I sat and got myself ready.  And he did it…

2013week10bsmI would have liked my focus to be a bit more true, but I caught it, and for today, I’m pretty happy about it.

Week 9: Drinking Glasses

The theme for this week was Glass. For a few days last week, I had thought the theme was Reflection, so my mind was going that direction. But Reflection is coming up later. Looking through glass wasn’t really working for me because I wanted some sort of glass that was distinct.

Anyway, at some point during the week, I was putting the dishes away, and realized our drinking glasses were pretty cool. I decided to pick out some fun paper {I thought the rain drops were appropriate} and place the glasses in a pattern. I messed around with different ideas for a while, and I liked how this one turned out.

Nothing amazing for sure, but I had some fun with the set-up and in post-processing. I feel a little nuts for taking 75+ pictures of our drinking glasses, but I’m certain I’m learning along the way.

Week 9 ~ GlassLots of photography stuff coming up for the month of March, so stay tuned.
